Job Description
- Perform a variety of full-time Deputy Sheriff duties in accordance with federal, state, county and departmental regulations.
- Responsibilities include the care, custody and transportation of inmates at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
- Work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule that includes evenings, weekends and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education.
- U.S. citizenship.
Lateral Transfer Requirements
- Recent employment (no more than two years since separation) as a full-time law enforcement officer.
- Minimum of 12 months continuous work experience as a full-time law enforcement officer (not including police academy and field training), including successful completion of the probationary period.
- Must provide academy curriculum and training records of all law enforcement-related training and copies of performance evaluations.
- Must provide a detailed resume (including dates) of related training and work assignment(s) held as a law enforcement officer, such as patrol, investigations, etc.
- Must be a non-smoker at time of appointment.
Ineligibility (includes but is not limited to)
- Your law enforcement certification has been suspended or revoked.
- You are currently under criminal or administrative investigation.
- You have limited law enforcement experience, which may include, but is not limited to: part-time officers, reserve officers, security officers, corrections officers, or special/limited jurisdiction police officers (i.e., tribal, military, hospital, etc.).
Selection Procedure
- Applicants must successfully complete a personal interview, polygraph examination, background investigation, and psychological examination.
- Applicants must serve an initial probationary period of 12 months commencing with the date of original appointment, exclusive of the time spent in training at the appropriate training academy.

- 6 Years $50,915
- 8 Years $56,008
- 8+ Years up to $61,888
- Health insurance (tax exempt premiums): County pays 85% of cost for individual coverage, and 75% of cost for two-party or family coverage.
- Retirement: Eligibility (regular service): Age 55 with 5 or more years of service or 25 years of service (including sick leave).
