Deputy Sheriff - Part Time Job Description (Job # 07-9502)

Part-time Deputy Sheriffs are assigned to work in the courts. Part-time Deputy Sheriffs maintain the same level of certification as full-time Deputy Sheriffs. Part-Time Deputy Sheriffs who are not certified as law enforcement officers in the commonwealth of Virginia will attend thirty weeks of paid training at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy. Those who work for the Sheriff's Office on a part-time basis will work in the courthouse.

  • Each Deputy will work a minimum of 20 hours per week to include the opportunity to obtain additional hours of work.
    • There are two potential schedules for those deputies who work part-time in the courts.
      • Schedule I includes working 5 days a week for 4 hours each day for a total of 40 hours in a pay period.
      • Schedule II includes working 3 days one week and 2 days the next equaling 8 hours each day for a total of 40 hours in a pay period.

  • The duties of a Deputy Sheriff working within the courts may include but are not limited to:
    • Security within the courtroom and complex
    • Transporting inmates to and from court to the Adult Detention Center
    • Arresting those who have been remanded into the custody of the Sheriff
    • Serving civil process
    • Responding to emergency situations

  • Deputy Sheriffs who work on a part-time basis within the courts may, if possible, choose to change from a part-time to a full-time position. The requirements for both a full-time and part-time Deputy Sheriff are the same. The benefits for a full-time and part-time Deputy Sheriff are the same except that a part-time Deputy earns about one-half the amount of leave per year.
