Reserve Deputy Sheriff


The Reserve Deputy Sheriff Academy for Fall 2014 is now full. The Sheriff's Office is no longer accepting applications. Please check back in spring 2015 for possible announcements about a new Academy session.

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs are uniformed volunteers trained to perform a variety of operational and administrative assignments for the Sheriff’s Office. Selection of candidates is based on a comprehensive assessment of each applicant’s qualifications, background and availability to support activities of the Sheriff’s Office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • United States citizen
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license
  • No convictions for felonies, serious misdemeanors or crimes of moral turpitude.

Volunteer Requirements

  • At least 12 hours of service each month (144 hours per calendar year)
  • Eight hours of training annually to maintain status as Reserve Deputy Sheriff

Training

  • Reserve Deputy Sheriff Academy
    • September 10 - November 5, 2014 (10 weeks)
    • 4 hours on Wednesday evenings, 8 hours on Saturdays
    • Fairfax County Public Safety Center, 10520 Judicial Drive, Fairfax, Va.
  • Coursework will include, but not be limited to:
    • Inmate interviews, supervision, behavior and searches
    • Courtroom security, searches and testimony
    • Handcuffing, key control and hostage situations
    • Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN)
    • Defensive tactics
    • Civil law process
    • Traffic and crowd control
    • Child safety seat inspections and child ID
    • Cultural diversity awareness
    • Communication and public information
    • Report writing
    • CPR, AED and first aid
    • Radios
    • Firearms awareness
    • Baton and OC spray
  • Graduation and swearing-in ceremony
    • November 8, 2014, 10 a.m. - Noon
    • Historic Courthouse, 4000 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, Va
