The Sheriff's Office periodically schedules safety seat inspections at convenient locations throughout the county. Ensuring that your safety seat is installed correctly will give you the peace of mind that your child is riding safely. Many safety experts say that 80 to 90 percent of child safety seats are installed and/or used incorrectly. The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office can help drivers ensure that a child fits securely in the safety seat and that the safety seat fits securely in the vehicle seat.

In 2007, Sheriff's deputies — working with the Safe Kids Coalition, the Fairfax County Police Department, and the City of Fairfax Police Department — checked approximately 2,800 safety seats throughout the county. Deputies reported a misuse rate of 97.5%.

For more information, contact the Sheriff's Office via e-mail . To hear about future safety seat inspection events, call the public safety hotline at 703-280-0559. Please call the hotline on the scheduled day of an event to confirm that it is, indeed, taking place.

Virginia law requires that ALL children up to age 8 must be in a child restraint device (which includes a booster seat).

The law also states that ALL rear-facing infant seats MUST be placed in the back seat of a vehicle. In the event the vehicle does not have a back seat, the rear-facing infant seat may be placed in the front passenger seat ONLY if the vehicle is either not equipped with a passenger side airbag or the passenger side airbag has been deactivated.
