Wanted:  Your Stories About Buying or Selling A Universally Designed Home

Do you or a loved one have a disability and had a difficult time working with a realtor to purchase a single family home with a no step entry so you can enter your potential new home unimpeded, doorways wide enough for you to navigate without putting holes in the walls, or a bathroom that can be used without spending thousands of dollars on significant renovations?  Or, have you tried to sell a home that has Universal Design features and run into problems working with a realtor who sees them as a burden rather than an asset, thereby hampering your ability to successfully market your home to the right buyer that would benefit greatly from the Universal Design features?

If so, then we want to hear your story!  If you’ve had an experience similar to the examples outlined above, either positive or negative, then e-mail disabilityservices@fairfaxcounty.gov or call 703-913-7559.  All responses will be kept confidential and no personal information will be shared unless you give specific permission to do so.

A Fairfax 50+ Community Action Plan Housing Initiative is to work with the Building For All Committee to make it easier to connect single family home buyers who want Universal Design features with people selling Universally Designed homes.  Realtors are an essential part of any home buying or selling experience, and are the key to making this a successful endeavor.  By sharing your story, you will be playing a vital role in making buying and selling Universally Designed homes easier and more cost-effective for homebuyers, realtors and sellers alike.

Public participation in Building For All Committee (BFAC) meetings is always welcome.  BFAC meetings are generally held on the fourth Thursday of every month at 1 p.m. in room 232 of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax VA, 22035.  For more information or specific meeting details, contact Matthew Barkley at 703-324-5868, TTY 703-449-1186 or matthew.barkley@fairfaxcounty.gov.  We hope to see you at the next meeting!
