Suicide: Who is at Risk and What to Do About It

Learn why suicide is a public health issue, how to recognize and respond to suicidal risk in older adults, and become acquainted with emergency psychiatric resources in the region. Keynote speaker Richard McKeon, Ph.D., MPH, Chief, Suicide Prevention Branch, SAMHSA gives an overview of the problem of suicide and illustrates what the issue looks like for older adults.  The panel discussion, Assessing for Suicide Risk in a Multi-Cultural Context, with Hiyawkal Gizachew, LCSW, Clinical Program Manager, and Saara Amri, LPC, Bilingual Mental Health Therapist/Clinical Supervisor, both with the Multicultural Center of Northern Virginia Family Services, is about recognizing the ways that seniors from various cultures might present, as well how a caregiver’s own cultural values might impact their ability to recognize a senior in need of more assessment.  (CC)
