Fairfax County Teens Fall Victim to Scam

(2019, August 21)

An 18 year old Bowie, MD man is in custody after reaching out to teens via social media for the sole purpose of committing a money scam. Yahya Koroma was arrested around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20th and charged with three counts of obtaining money by false pretenses. He was taken to the Adult Detention Center and held without bond.

Detectives from the Fairfax County Major Crimes Bureau, including Financial Crimes, Child Exploitation and Street Crimes units worked diligently to identify and arrest Koroma after reports surfaced over the past several months. Detectives determined Koroma conned at least three of the young victims into providing their ATM card numbers and PIN numbers after assuring them they would receive a portion of the money from checks he deposited into their account. Koroma withdrew the victim’s money before the fraudulent checks bounced and were discovered.

The investigation is still active and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the crimes. If you believe your child may be a victim, please contact the Fairfax County Major Crimes Bureau detectives at 703-246-7800.

As a reminder:

  • Never share credit, debit, ATM card, or other financial information with anyone
  • Something that sounds too good to be true, probably is NOT true
  • When in doubt, contact Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800.

Lawn Care and Swimming Pool Water Draining

Tips from the Fairfax County Stormwater Planning Division

Fertilize in the Fall if at All
Fall is a good time to evaluate your lawn care program and adjust for the coming year, whether you do it yourself or contract it out.

  • Fertilize in the Fall.Timing is everything when you apply fertilizer. Fall is when the roots that will sustain the plants through the following summer are actively growing.
  • Choosing a Lawn Care Company. If you decide to hire lawn care professionals, carefully research the company’s operations.
  • Soil Matters. Before you fertilize, test your soil to learn what, if anything, it needs. For $10.00, Virginia Cooperative Extension will analyze your soil sample and return the results to you. Pick up a soil test kit at any Fairfax County Public Library or at the Virginia Cooperative Extension office at the Pennino Building, 12011 Government Center Parkway, Suite 1050, Fairfax, VA.
  • Let It Lie.Turf clippings are mostly composed of the grass’ leaf tissue and thus decompose rapidly. Clippings left on the lawn will contribute a substantial amount of nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil, thus reducing fertilizer requirements.

For more information on proper lawn care, please visit the Soil and Water Conservation District  Web page.

Proper Disposal of Yard Waste
Consider managing yard waste onsite. Leave grass clippings on your lawn by grass cycling and/or composting along with other organics, such as food waste, to enrich your soil and promote healthy plants.  When packaging yard waste for collection at the curb, please consider the use of paper lawn bags or reusable containers.

For more information on proper disposal of yard waste please visit Public Works Recycling Web page.

If you live near a park, please do not dispose of yard waste on their property because it can deter native plants from growing adequately, as well as damage or destroy wildlife habitat.

To determine if you live near a park property, visit Find Your Borders: Avoid Park Encroachment Web page.

Proper Discharge of Swimming Pool Water
Swimming pool owners and operators can protect local streams and rivers by following guidelines for draining swimming pool water. Both chlorinated and saltwater swimming pools may harm the environment if not properly managed.
