Resources for Fairfax County Residents Affected by the Federal Government Shutdown

We are aware that the effects of a prolonged federal government shutdown may be impacting residents living in Fairfax County.  Our office is here to provide information and resources to those affected during this time.

Contact Your Utility Provider for information about payment arrangements.

Tenants

  • Notify your landlord immediately that you have been affected by the Federal government shutdown.
  • Ask if rental payments can be delayed or reduced while furlough is in effect.
  • Ask if late fees can be waived during this time period.
  • Know what you can pay and offer the landlord a payment plan to consider.

 

Mortgages and Credit Cards

  • Prioritize and/or reduce your credit card expenses.
  • Talk to your mortgage lender or credit card companies about possible solutions such as a lower interest rate or extending the terms.
  • Ask if partial payments can be made and/or late fees can be waived.

 

Credit Bureaus

  • Don’t wait until you are in financial hardship.  Contact the credit bureaus now.
  • Write a financial hardship letter to creditors such as credit card companies, auto loans, student loans etc.
  • Keep the letter concise, explain your situation, keep your request specific, and restate your request.
  • After you go back to work and resume payments, you may consider the Credit Bureau’s option to dispute information by providing a written statement regarding missed payments or other credit problems.

 

Donating to Charities

  • Be wary of charities that spring up overnight in connection with a current event.
  • Contact the charity directly.
  • Be mindful of door-to-door solicitation.
  • Contact your local food banks to inquire about providing assistance.
  • Never send cash donations.
