Disability Inclusion Conference

Disability Inclusion Conference 2019The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and The Arc of Northern Virginia will host a Disability Inclusion Conference on Saturday, June 29, 2019 from 8:30am – 12:30pm at the Fairfax County Government Center (12000 Government Center Pkwy, Fairfax, VA 22035). This event will include over 25 display tables, a panel discussion, and community breakout sessions on topics such as employment, housing, public safety, social opportunities, and business-to-business tips for creating inclusive retail spaces. All members of the community are invited to attend to discuss how we can work together as One Fairfax to include adults with developmental disabilities in community life.

“Our public school system does an excellent job of helping students of all abilities thrive in the classroom, but when it comes time for graduation, many families and individuals wonder what happens next,” Chairman Sharon Bulova said. “I am excited to bring the community together on June 29 to celebrate our successes, identify gaps, and dive deeper into this important topic! There is always more that we can do as a community to be inclusive and foster opportunities for people of all abilities.”

“Differently abled people have so much to offer their community, they just need to be given the chance,” Braddock District Supervisor John Cook said. “Everyone, no matter their ability, should have access to jobs, housing, and accessibility accommodations. By including those with disabilities into the workforce and our community we all benefit and grow stronger together. I am honored to be a part of the Disability Inclusion Conference.”

"The Arc of Northern Virginia is honored to be co-hosting this important event,” Executive Director Rikki Epstein of The Arc of Northern Virginia said. “We believe that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve to live in the community of their choosing, and have a fundamental right to be fully included and actively participate in all aspects of society. Inclusion is not just about physical proximity. It is about intentionally planning for the success of all individuals, and the removal of barriers that impede their success. This conference will be a positive step toward realizing that goal in Fairfax County."

Coffee and light breakfast will be provided. This event is free to attend and open to the public. More information and registration is available at: www.fairfaxcounty.gov/chairman/disabilityinclusionconference2019
