Fairfax Connector to Operate Enhanced Saturday Service on Inauguration Day

January 9, 2009

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Fairfax Connector will operate an enhanced Saturday schedule with more trips and additional routes.  In anticipation of increased ridership into Washington, D.C., for inaugural activities, routes serving Metrorail stations located in Fairfax County will be supplemented with more trips in order to accommodate more passengers.  Bus service will operate from 4:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight.

Metrorail stations with enhanced Connector service are:

  • Huntington – Routes 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171
  • Franconia-Springfield – Routes 171, 310, 321, 322, 401
  • Van Dorn Street – Routes 321, 322
  • Dunn Loring – Route 401
  • West Falls Church – Routes 401, 425, 427, 505, 551, 585, 950 and 980

In addition to the routes listed above, Connector routes 574, 605 and RIBS 1, 2, 3, and 4 will operate on Jan. 20.  These routes do not go to Metrorail stations but provide transfer opportunities to buses that do serve Metrorail stations.  No other routes will operate on this holiday.

On Monday, Jan. 19, Fairfax Connector will operate weekday service on all routes except 380, 595, 597 and VRE EZ-Bus, which will not operate that day. Normal weekday service will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Due to the unprecedented number of people expected to attend the inauguration, the region’s residents should be aware that events during the entire inaugural weekend may affect their daily lives, even if they are not planning to attend any of them.  Public transportation is expected to be at capacity that day.  Parking will be limited at Metrorail stations and Park and Rides.  Passengers should expect crowded buses and long delays.

Since traffic is expected to be so heavy, employers are encouraged to allow employees to telework that day or, if travel is necessary, to carpool with others.  FCDOT’s Employer Outreach Program can assist with transportation options by calling 703-324-1181, TTY 711.  For ridesharing assistance, call 703-324-1111, TTY 711.

Of the 60,000 parking spaces Metro has available on Inauguration Day, over 17,000 are located in Fairfax County.  Parking lots fill up very early even on a regular weekday, so people need to plan accordingly.
