Automatic Installment FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often will you debit my account?

You select the frequency. You may select from monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly or one lump sum.

What if my account doesn't have enough money?

We will try again the next day. If your account still has insufficient funds we will try again at the next regularly scheduled period. The County charges no fee in such cases, unless you are on a mandatory payment plan for delinquent taxes. You should check with your own bank, however, in case they charge a fee for insufficient funds.

How will I know how much money to transfer?

The amount to be debited as a prepayment is your choice. As a rule, you may wish to estimate your annual tax bill and divide by the number of payments you plan to make before the due date. The last debit made to your account will be one month prior to the due date. A balance due bill will be mailed if you still owe money on the account. If you want, the County will help you estimate your bill. Please call 703-222-8234 [TTY 711] for assistance.

When can I sign up?

You may sign up at any time during the year. You may download the form from our web site or call 703-222-8234 [TTY 711] to have a form mailed to you.

What if I move or sell my car?

If you move or sell your vehicle, notify us either by email or call 703-222-8234 [TTY 711]. We will prorate your taxes for the time you lived in Fairfax County and/or owned a vehicle, as appropriate. If the sum of your payments exceeds the amount of taxes you owe Fairfax County we will refund the overpayment.

May I use this option to pay delinquent taxes?

Depending on the circumstances, delinquent taxes may be eligible to be paid over time. Interest continues to accrue. To discuss further, call our delinquent collection staff at 703-222-8234 [TTY 711].

What happens after the tax due date?

After your current year taxes are paid, your installment payments will be applied towards your next year's taxes. We will send out reminders in case you want to adjust the time and amount of your installment payments.

May I use this option to pay my car taxes and my real estate taxes?

Yes. Be sure to list everything on your application form.
