Tax Exemptions

The following types of vehicle registrations are not subject to car taxes:

  • Government - Any motor vehicle owned by the State or any political subdivision or United States government. Required documentation: Government registration.

  • Diplomat - Any motor vehicle owned and used for personal or official purposes by accredited consular or diplomatic officers of foreign governments, their family members and employees, who are nationals of the state by which they are appointed and are not citizens of the United States. Required documentation: Diplomatic ID.

  • Military - Any motor vehicle normally garaged, stored, or parked in the County or on a United States military base within the geographic boundaries of the County and registered in this state or any other jurisdiction whose owner is on full-time active duty in the military service absent from his state of residence or domicile may be exempted from local taxation upon application to DTA. Required documentation: State vehicle registration, proof of domicile, military orders, military LES, and photo ID. Beginning November 11, 2009, under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act (PL 111-97), a qualifying spouse who shares domicile with an exempt military service member, and who resides in Fairfax County in order to live with the service member, can also qualify for exemption (whether the vehicle is co-owned with the service member or owned individually by the spouse). Proof of domicile is required. See our Taxation of the Military page for Exemption Application and for more information regarding military exemptions, and MSRRA guidance provided by the Pentagon Army and Air Force legal Assistance Office.

    • Effective January 2016, vehicles leased by a qualified military service member and/or spouse will receive a 100% state Car Tax subsidy (PPTRA) as a tax credit on the first $20,000 of assessed value. The credit will be reflected on the bill, but the leased vehicle remains fully taxable on any remaining assessed value in excess of $20,000. Contact DTA to claim and document military eligibility.

  • Daily Rental - Any vehicle used as a daily rental passenger vehicle. Required documentation: State Registration showing registration as a daily rental vehicle.

  • Tax Relief - Any one vehicle owned by a person who is granted Tax Relief by the County. Required documentation: Proof of approved tax relief status.
