Small businesses face unique challenges when it comes to sustainability and energy efficiency, but there are steps any business can take that make both environmental and economic sense.

The resources below are designed specifically for small businesses. Not sure where to start? Give the Green Business Partners Program a call at 703-324-5955 or email us at We are here to help! And don’t forget about Fairfax County’s residential program, Energy Action Fairfax. Many of Energy Action Fairfax’s tips and resources apply to small businesses as well, especially home-based businesses.

ENERGY STAR’s technical resources for small businesses webpage provides a wealth of information, including a small business Action Workbook and resources designed specifically for restaurants, offices, home-based businesses, and others. ENERGY STAR also offers training resources, including weekly webinars and suggestions for tenants. To help estimate energy and cost savings from equipment upgrades, ENERGY STAR offers energy savings calculators for nearly every category of ENERGY STAR product – from lighting to food service equipment. You can even join ENERGY STAR’s Small Business Network simply by pledging to be energy efficient and use ENERGY STAR appliances.

Dominion Energy

Dominion Energy offers financial assistance through its Small Business Improvement program. After performing an on-site energy assessment of your facility, a contractor will create a personalized report showing estimated potential savings from various energy efficiency improvements. A portion of the cost for installing the efficiency measures will be refunded by Dominion.
