Resilient Fairfax Public Meeting To Be Held on June 15, 2021

All residents of Fairfax County and other county stakeholders with an interest in climate adaptation and resilience planning are invited to attend a virtual public meeting on June 15, 2021 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. This meeting will be held via Zoom. This is the first public engagement opportunity in connection with the “Resilient Fairfax” initiative, a county-wide effort to increase the community’s resilience to climate impacts such as flooding, severe storms, extreme temperatures, and other impacts.

The meeting agenda will include an overview of Resilient Fairfax, anticipated climate hazards and vulnerabilities in the county, and types of strategies that are typically used to address these impacts. During each section of the meeting, the public will participate and provide feedback via “polling,” "breakout sessions," and other virtual meeting functions. The community’s climate concerns, identification of vulnerable areas in the county, and strategy preferences are all essential in the development of the plan.

In addition to this public meeting, an online survey will be open to all members of the public from June 8 until July 2. This survey will collect information from the community about climate vulnerabilities and risks, key concerns, and individual preparedness for climate threats and extreme weather events. Additional opportunities will be available for public input in the fall and winter of 2021. The Resilient Fairfax team is hopeful that in-person public engagement will be possible at that time, depending on pandemic conditions.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the public meeting and take the survey, to help provide the Resilient Fairfax team with a complete picture of public preparedness and opinions around climate readiness within Fairfax County. Information gathered from the public will help to inform the development of the county’s first-ever Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan.
