HomeWise Monthly Update: February 2022

The HomeWise program is running full steam as we enter the third month of 2022. In February, HomeWise staff and volunteers officially launched a new series of virtual events with a webinar on preventing heat loss and sealing air leaks. Volunteers presented big picture concepts and practical tips Fairfax County residents can use to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of their homes. Attendees asked questions about insulation, weatherstripping, and how to install socket sealers behind electrical outlets.

Even as they prepared for and presented the first webinar, the 2021 class of HomeWise volunteers also completed a supplemental training on behavior change and habit formation. This training will help them have productive conversations with residents who are interested in examining their own water and energy-use habits. Meanwhile, the 2022 class of volunteers continued their substantive training on environmental, technical, and social concepts related to energy- and water-savings at home.

The new class of volunteers have completed five weeks of training to date, covering big picture concepts on energy and water, how to vanquish energy vampires, and how to improve water efficiency from showerheads, faucets, and toilets.

Next up in the virtual series is a virtual Q&A. Residents can sign up for a 10-minute slot and speak with a trained volunteer one-on-one about their energy and water conservation questions and challenges at home. For the remainder of 2022, the Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination will offer one HomeWise webinar and one virtual Q&A per month to allow county residents ample opportunity to learn and improve their homes. Upcoming event dates are listed below.

March 5 - Ask A Volunteer Virtual Q&A Session

March 16 – Webinar: Water Conservation in Bathrooms

April 7 – Ask A Volunteer Virtual Q&A Session

April 19 – Webinar: Outdoor Water Conservation

Additionally, new volunteers will complete their training with modules on light bulbs, sealing air leaks, and indoor environmental quality. They will hear from a guest speaker in late March and will prepare for a hands-on training session taking place in early April.

This article is part of a series. A new HomeWise Monthly Update will be published roughly every four weeks and will provide a snapshot of work completed and anticipated activities in the weeks ahead.
