Energy Use in Government Buildings

County government buildings include all Fairfax County government facilities that are maintained by the Facilities Management Department (FMD). This service area encompasses several different types of facilities such as police and fire stations, libraries, health clinics, courthouse buildings, and administrative offices.

Energy Use Equivalent Carbon Emissions

The graph above shows the equivalent carbon emissions from electricity and natural gas used at county facilities managed by FMD from FY 2018 to FY 2022, indicating a 19% decrease.

Electricity Use In Government Buildings

The graph above shows the total electricity consumption in government buildings managed by the Facilities Management Department from FY 2018 through FY 2022. During this time, there was an 11% reduction in consumption.

Natural Gas Use In Government Buildings

Electricity Use By Building Category

Buildings are grouped based on their function and energy usage profile, however, the data is limited by the way facilities are metered. Occasionally, locations with more than one function are shown under one building category because there is only one meter serving the site.
