History

Since 1974, SACC has provided families with high quality school age child care services. SACC, a Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services program, offers before and after school care for children attending kindergarten through sixth grade. SACC centers are located in most Fairfax County public elementary schools and some county community centers. Children with special needs are fully included in all SACC centers. In addition, SACC programs at Key and Kilmer Centers serve youth, ages 5-21, with multiple types of disabilities. SACC also offers full day winter, spring and summer camp programs during school breaks.

Licensing

SACC centers are licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and meet, or exceed, the standards established by the Office of Child Care Health and Safety for licensed child day care programs. The purpose of the standards is to reduce risks in center environments and protect children by ensuring the activities, services and facilities of centers are conducive to children's well-being. The VDOE Child Care Licensing team conducts announced and unannounced center inspection visits throughout the year to monitor center compliance with all licensing standards.

Programs and Curriculum

SACC offers four programs: school year, winter, spring and summer camp for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The SACC program is designed to serve children who need care five days a week. SACC enrollment and fees are not able to accommodate drop-in or short term service.

The curriculum for each program incorporates SACC’s six areas of exploration: the visual and performing arts, language arts, sports and recreation, science, technology, engineering, art, and math (S.T.E.A.M.) and community and culture connections. These focus areas provide the structure for creative curriculum activities, experiences, and projects designed to expand children’s interests, develop their talents, and enhance their learning. Each day includes a variety of opportunities for children to participate in both curriculum related and other favorite activities, including outside time (weather permitting) and active games in the gym.  Children will also have the opportunity each day to work on homework and spend time with friends. Throughout the year children may go on an occasional field trip including walking, biking, swimming, and those requiring use of FCPS or public transportation.

Weather Policy

SACC programs located in community centers will follow the same inclement weather procedures as SACC programs in FCPS buildings. SACC's policy in the event of emergency school closings, delayed openings, and early closings is as follows:

Full Day Closings - SACC will be closed whenever schools are closed for the full day due to weather conditions, energy problems, or other emergencies.

Delayed School Openings - On days when school opens two hours late, SACC centers will open at 8:00 a.m. for children enrolled in the Before School session.

Early School Closings and/or Afternoon or Evening Activities Canceled - SACC centers will open at the time of school dismissal for children enrolled in the After School session and remain open until 6:15 p.m. Please note: Due to the possibility of hazardous road conditions; in the interest of safety of the children, families and SACC teachers, SACC administration requests parents make every effort to pick up children as soon as possible. Note: SACC centers are open until all children have been picked up.

Teacher Workdays - On Teacher Workdays, if school offices are closed due to inclement weather, SACC will be closed. On Teacher Workdays, if FCPS announces a delayed opening or delayed arrival for all scheduled personnel, SACC centers will open at 8:00 a.m. and remain open until 5 p.m.

Emergency announcements will be communicated on the official @FCPSnews Twitter account (with blue checkmark), on the FCPS Facebook page, and on the FCPS website at www.fcps.edu . Families can also subscribe to FCPS News You Chose Delayed Openings and School Closings to receive information through email.

Parent Advisory Council

SACC Parent Advisory Council members represent families of each SACC center. An active and engaged partnership with families is essential to providing SACC services that help families succeed and children thrive. PAC meetings are held throughout the year and provide an opportunity for sharing program-wide information. PAC representatives provide invaluable communication about the needs of children and families in their community in order to inform SACC programming and policies. Additionally, the Parent Advisory Council advocates for high-quality, affordable, accessible school age child care services throughout the county.
