131st Recruit Firefighter Graduation

When:   Friday, September 9, 2011, 7 p.m.

Since April of this year, 23 recruit firefighters have been undergoing training to respond to hazardous materials incidents, emergency vehicles extrications, swift water rescue, confined space rescue, fire suppression, and emergency medical incidents. These firefighter recruits will officially become professional firefighters in the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department upon graduation.

Adam K. Thiel, Fire Chief, City of Alexandria, will be the keynote speaker. Award-winning reporter, Gail Pennybacker, WJLA, ABC 7 news, will be the emcee.

In 2002, Chief Thiel was appointed by then—Governor Mark Warner to lead the Virginia Department of Fire Programs as its Executive Director. During his tenure in state government, he was member of the Commonwealth Preparedness Working Group, Virginia Emergency Response Council, and the State Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Advisory Committee. In 2004, Chief Thiel was selected as deputy chief of emergency services for the City of Goodyear, Arizona, managing the city’s response to fires, medical emergencies, and other all-hazards incidents. He was appointed the Fire Chief in the City of Alexandria in August of 2007.

Chief Thiel earned undergraduate degrees in history and fire science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and University of Maryland University College; he holds a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University. He has completed the Virginia Executive Institute and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. He also is a Certified Emergency Manager, a designated Chief Fire Officer, and Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers. He currently serves as chair of the National Fire Protection Association Technical Committee on Emergency Services Organization Risk Management and is a member of the National Fire Academy Board of Visitors.
