Consistent with the requirements and obligations to protected classes under federal and Virginia law, and the requirements of Fairfax County Code Section 3-1-21 and Section 1.10 of the Personnel Regulations:

  • In making initial job appointments to the county service, appointing authorities shall take into consideration or give preference to an applicant's status as a honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States, provided that the veteran meets all of the knowledge, skills, and eligibility requirements of the job.
  • Appointing authorities shall give additional consideration to veterans who have a service-connected disability fixed by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • This consideration or preference is limited to initial appointments to county service, and shall not be required in demotions, promotions, or transfers.

How to Claim Military Status Preference

If you are applying for a job with Fairfax County, you will be asked Agency-Wide questions, which include an opportunity to indicate your status as a Veteran or Disabled Veteran. If you are qualified to be considered for veterans' preference, you must indicate it in this section.

Prior to appointment to a merit position, eligible veterans will be required to submit a copy of Form DD 214 for verification of military discharge information.
