CALL TO ORDER

Commission Chair Gloria Crawford called the Wednesday, May 3, 2017 Commission meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Commissioner S. Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the April 5, 2017, agenda be approved as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.

Approval of Minutes: It was moved by Commissioner S. Malik and seconded by Commissioner Selim that the March 1, 2017, minutes be approved as presented. The motion passed by majority vote.

STAFF ISSUES

Deputy Director Fawcett updated the Commissioners with the March Monthly Report. The staff met the Balance Score Card Goals for the month.

COMMISSION BUSINESS

HRC#2017025H – CONCILIATION. It was moved by Commissioner S. Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salon that this complaint be dismissed due to insufficient evidence that a violation of the Human Rights Ordinance has occurred consistent with the recommendation of OHREP. The motion passed by unanimous vote.

HRC#2017023H – CONCILIATION. It was moved by Commissioner M. Malik and seconded by Commissioner S. Malik that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.

HRC#2014016E – CONCILIATION. It was moved by Commissioner S. Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by majority vote with Commissioner Solon abstaining.

COMMUNITY CONCERNS

Outreach – Upcoming outreach events were discussed. Nicole Rawlings highlighted the upcoming FAIR HOUSING LUNCHEON scheduled for April 27, 2017 and encouraged the Commissioner’s to register by April 14th.

Commissioner Khairallah proposed to put Outreach as a regular item on the agenda and establish a Commission committee regarding outreach programs. This proposal was tabled until the next meeting.

PENDING BUSINESS

The Awards Ceremony - A nominee for the Virginia Peter’s Award was presented to the Commission. It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and second by Commissioner Griffin Paul that nominee Jerry Hopkins be presented with the award. The Motion passed by unanimous vote.

It was also discussed that the Commissioners will decide between three types of awards for the future. Further discussion and a vote on this matter will be taken at the next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Commissioner Selim mentioned a recognition ceremony for former Commissioner Margosis. The Commission agreed to discuss recognition of Commissioners Margosis at the next meeting.
