CALL TO ORDER
Commission Chair Gloria Crawford called the Wednesday, August 1, 2018, Commission meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Commissioner Crawford introduced the new Commissioner, Mr. Raul Torres, to the Commission.
Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Khairallah that the August 1, 2018, agenda be approved as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Approval of Minutes: It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Crawford that the minutes for July 18, 2018 Commission meeting be approved as presented. The motion passed by majority vote with Commissioner Khairallah and Commissioner Solon abstaining. The June 27, 2018 minutes will be reviewed at the next meeting, due to not having the Minutes in the binder.
STAFF ISSUES: There were no staff issues.
COMMISSION BUSINESS:
HRC #2016118E - APPEAL. The complainant in this appeal is requesting an Arabic interpreter. The appeal was tabled and will be scheduled for a later date when a certified interpreter can be present.
HRC # 2017065E - APPEAL. It was moved by Commissioner Torres and seconded by Commissioner Khairallah that the staff findings be upheld and this matter be dismissed due to no cause finding. The motion passed by majority vote with Commissioner Bhinge voting against the motion and Commissioner Solon abstaining.
HRC #2018038H - Conciliation. It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Khairallah that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
COMMUNITY CONCERNS: Future Awards Programs was tabled until the next meeting. In addition, Commissioner Crawford would like the Commissioners to think about who they would like to have as Secretary of the Commission so a vote could take place in the near future.
PENDING BUSINESS: Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity and Source of Income: It was moved by Commissioner Solon and seconded by Commissioner Torres that the Commission recommends to the county board of Supervisors that they support legislation to add sexual orientation/gender identity and source of income as protected classes in the Virginia Fair Housing. The motion passed by majority vote with Commissioner Salinas, Commissioner Khairallah, and Commissioner Bhinge abstaining.
NEW BUSINESS: There was no New Business.
