CALL TO ORDER
Commission Chair Gloria Crawford called the Wednesday, October 17, 2018 Commission meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Commissioner Torres and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the October 17, 2018 agenda be approved as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Approval of Minutes: It was moved by Commissioner Torres and seconded by Commissioner Shipman that the September 19, 2018 minutes be approved as presented. The motion passed by majority vote with Commissioner’s Crawford and Solon abstaining.
STAFF ISSUES: Director Sanders informed the Commission that OHREP has hired a new investigator; Precious Hopkins, a former investigator at the Prince William County Office of Human Rights will be joining the team in late October. Mr. Saunders also informed the Commissioners that a new Commissioner, Bryan W. Hudson, will be sworn in soon and begin his Commissioner duties. Director Saunders stressed the importance of attendance for the November 7th meeting due to the high number of Housing items, which must be voted on by a quorum.
COMMISSION BUSINESS:
HRC #2018043H - It was moved by Commissioner Torres and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that this complaint be dismissed due to insufficient evidence that a violation of the Human Rights Ordinance has occurred consistent with the recommendation of OHREP. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
HRC# 2018081H - Conciliation It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Solon that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by Majority vote with Commissioners Solon and Salim abstaining, and Commissioner Alber voted against the motion.
HRC# 2013014E - Conciliation It was moved by Commissioner Solon and seconded by Commissioner Selim that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
COMMUNITY CONCERNS:
Commissioner Crawford stated that the Commissioners need to be considering officers to elect for the future.
Future Awards Programs - Tabled until the next meeting.
Commissioner Salinas mentioned the possibility of adding pictures of the Awardee to the County site and also to send the Awardee pictures of the event. Commissioner Crawford added that this item will be raised in future award discussions.
PENDING BUSINESS: There was no Pending Business.
NEW BUSINESS: Director Saunders asked the Commissioners to please note on their calendars to attend the November 7th Commission meeting.
