Fairfax County Government seeks experienced, outstanding candidates for a career opportunity as its next Director of Transportation. The Director serves at the pleasure of the County Executive and reports directly to the Deputy County Executive, and provides leadership and direction to all of the Department of Transportation’s functions. The Director provides the Board of Supervisors, County Executive, and Deputy County Executive with policy guidance, goals, and action options for review and adoption. The Director is also responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction, understanding various funding sources and pursuing innovative financing methods, considering industry trends and innovations, partnering with federal, state, and local entities as well as metropolitan and regional planning organizations. The Director serves as the primary contact on matters of policy implementation and overall direction of the department; builds and maintains effective partnerships with elected officials and other government agencies; interacts directly with the public and the press, and serves as the primary “face” of the organization.



Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or transportation, financial management or a closely related field; plus ten years of progressively responsible relevant experience at a division chief or director level within a large local government or comparable experience in the private sector, including four years in a responsible administrative capacity.



Employment will be contingent upon the completion of a credit check and a criminal background investigation to the satisfaction of the employer. In addition, a Statement of Economic Interest form must be completed.



A graduate degree in civil engineering or transportation is preferred. A Professional Engineering (PE) license is desirable. The ideal candidate should also have six years of progressively responsible transportation experience, four of which must have been in a supervisory capacity at the division head level or above, in a large urban community (population in excess of 150,000) or comparable level in a related business or government agency. Proven experience with the following: management of a large transportation organization in public/private sector; transportation planning, transit operations, and highway operations; successful interaction with staff, state agencies, appointed commissions, industry, professional and trade organizations, citizens, elected officials, and the media; fiscal management; tracking legislative changes; working with interagency task forces; preparation for and participation in litigation; funding/innovated financing; public/private partnerships; and Transportation Demand Management.
