Performs the duties of instrumentation supervisor; coordinates and supervises instrumentation technicians in the daily operation, inspection, repair, calibration and maintenance of instrumentation electronic equipment in all county Pumping Stations, permanent and temporary wastewater flow meters and rain gauges. Operates and programs a central computer-based data collection and reporting system for inter-jurisdictional billing purposes, hydraulic capacity studies, and the identification of extraneous flow entering the sanitary sewer system. Oversees the activities of an instrumentation repair, maintenance, and calibration shop while taking the lead in the more technical installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of complex PLC-based pump controls, microprocessor-based flow meters, precipitation, pressure and level instruments and associated computer hardware, software and telemetry systems, including SCADA and related software. Plans and assigns work schedules, determines scope and priority of work based on pending work tasks. Prepares and discusses performance reviews, salary recommendations, and disciplinary actions. Assists with input in preparation of annual operating budgets. Promotes and ensures compliance with safety regulations such as VOSHA, OSHA, the Underground Protection Act, etc.

Communicates effectively and builds successful relationships with employees, residents, contractors, and other agencies in order to maximize the efficient use of manpower and equipment, ensuring that work is done in the most cost-effective, safe and environmentally sound manner. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the pumping stations Branch Chief.



Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to high school graduation or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education, including Technical/Trade school training; plus seven years of experience as an instrumentation technician; plus one year as an instrumentation lead or Instrumentation Technician III or equivalent; or one year of experience at the supervisory level or completion of an agency-approved supervisory development program or completion of the Fairfax County Supervisory Competency Certificate as revised for Maintenance and Trades.



The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to employment. Possession of a valid driver's license. Subject to 24-hour call-back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste. Ability to distinguish different color wiring.

Physical requirements of position: Able to lift 50 pounds; drive 1/2, 3/4 and 1-ton utility truck; and operate hoisting equipment. Stooping, extended standing and routine climbing are required for this position. The appointee to this position may be required to enter permitted confined spaces, using an OSHA-certified non-entry system, which includes a safety harness with a weight restriction of 310 pounds.



Experience in both flow meters and major systems in wastewater pumping stations. Electrical license or experience working with electrical systems. Experience negotiating and managing contracts with consultants.
