PROBATION COUNSELOR II


Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

Description:

Provides case management, counseling, and supervision to juveniles court ordered into the program. Position is located in the Residential Services Division at Boys Probation House ( 4410 Shirley Gate Road, Fairfax, Virginia), a post-dispositional community-based residential group home for adolescent males on probation or parole ages 14-18 in the therapeutic program and/or adolescent males ages 17-19 assigned to the Transitional Living program. The primary goal is to reduce chronic delinquent behavior and assist juveniles in accepting personal responsibility through therapeutic treatment program, and assisting residents on how to learn and apply skills associated with independent living. Conducts assessments for clients' needs, formulates treatment plans; leads individual, group and family counseling sessions; coordinates, implements, and monitors delivery of individual service plans. Ensures safety of residents and security of the facility in the evenings, overnights, and weekends; conducts building inspections and coordinates maintenance activities. Ensures the health care and physical well-being of residents through appropriate disbursement of medication and administration of first aid. Operates a 15-passenger van and transports residents to a variety of community activities, as well as accompanying residents on a minimum of two camping trips a year.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus two years of professional experience in probation work, law enforcement, education, or youth counseling. One year of graduate study in social/behavioral sciences, law enforcement or education may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

 

Special
Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer. Must have a valid driver license in the state of residence and must pass a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer as a condition of hiring and periodically thereafter. Must undergo a medical screening prior to starting work. TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter. Within a specified time frame after appointment to the position, must successfully complete training in physical restraint procedures and techniques. First Aid and CPR certification, and medication administration certification must be obtained within a specified time frame after the appointment and must recertify annually thereafter.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Experience working with adolescent male clients. Two years of experience working in a residential setting. Ability to work with complex behavioral problems and respond to crisis situations. Bilingual in Spanish and English. Excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Code of Virginia and Department of Juvenile Justice Standards. Working knowledge of Department of Juvenile Justice Tracking System (JTS), and VA Supreme Court Case Management System (CMS). A master's degree in counseling, social work, or related field. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software.

Note:

The position is a merit, full-time position with a rotating schedule in day, evening, and overnight shifts including weekends and holidays.
