Performs administrative support for the Archives and Records Management Department of the Fairfax County Public Library. Develops, implements and maintains a system for the identification, collection and protection of both permanent and long-term county electronic documents and records. Works with agencies to identify and implement best practices involving electronic records, to ensure proper retention and documentation for destruction. Provides records management training and on-site consultation. Provides reports and statistical data in various formats, as needed. Locates the proper accession, determines the status, and re-files records to their proper location in a timely manner. Provides general operational information. Serves as backup to clerical staff as needed to assist walk-in customers, certifying copies made from general district court records and re-filing of records. Duties are performed under the direction of the Assistant County Archivist.



Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education, supplemented by college-level course work in American history, American studies, library science, or a related field; plus two years of experience in cataloging and managing public records, preferably in a "records center" environment.



Ability required to lift up to 50-pound boxes (plan size) and 20-30 pound record center boxes. Must be able to drive a passenger vehicle. Must be able to move pallets containing boxes using pallet jack, forklift, or personnel lift at heights of 18 feet; and able to lift and toss boxes of above weights into compactor and truck or place on shelves.



Ability to prepare reports. Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and the ability to speak in front of groups of people in a professional setting. Able to find aids, guides, and other reference tools. Able to establish and maintain good working relationships with county personnel, professional researchers, and the public. Basic knowledge of procedures and legal requirements for the utilization of public records. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite computer software. Familiarity with scanning and digital conversion technologies.
