GENERAL BUILDING MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Description:

Specializes in appliance repair; may assist in the preparation of vacant housing units for occupancy by performing general maintenance and repair work using a variety of trade skills including plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry and drywall repairs. Performs preventive maintenance in vacant units. Able to perform cleaning and custodial work to complete the preparation of vacant units. Completes general maintenance work orders with minimal supervision. Troubleshoots and repairs appliances. Performs related duties as required, including snow removal and emergency work. Duties are performed under general supervision.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program in a specific trade with one year experience performing building maintenance, repair and/or construction work independently, or two years of varied and responsible full performance level experience in building maintenance, repair or construction trades.

 

Special
Requirements:

This position requires the use of a county vehicle on county business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

Must be able to work overtime hours and on-call for after-hour emergencies on a rotating basis.

Applicant must possess the necessary mobility to physically perform the essential job duties of the position including--but not limited to--lifting and carrying items/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; walking and standing for long periods of time; bending, reaching, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Solid background in appliance repair and maintenance; and experience in a full range of trade-related skills in residential property management maintenance, or other building maintenance related trade. Must be able to communicate clearly, in both verbal and written form, and have strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. Outstanding customer service skills. Must be a team player, able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both external and internal contacts. Knowledge and skill to operate a computer and experience using software programs. Ability to diagnose problems and repair major appliances, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, drywall work , painting, caulking, general carpentry, roof, gutters, a plus. Must have the ability to use and properly maintain maintenance equipment. Valid Class "B" driver's license is a plus.
