PARK/RECREATION SPECIALIST I

Description:

Two positions available. Directs the operations of regional teen programs and services. Plans, coordinates, implements, facilitates and evaluates teen programs. The activities and programs take place at teen center facilities and community locations in the assigned region. Works as a member of the region team to implement region-wide projects and activity strategies focused on obtaining specific outcomes for youth and reducing at-risk behavior across centers. Hires, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates exempt limited term staff and volunteers. Implements community response programs. Conducts outreach and intervention with at-risk youth. Identifies early warning signs of at-risk behavior and makes referrals to appropriate human service organizations or schools. Assists with the development of partnerships with the community and coordinates volunteer and community support. Works with the schools and the community to recruit teens and market programs. Obtains equipment and supplies, executes programs policies, procedures, budget and finance reports, publicity and program calendars. Duties are performed under the direction of the Teen Center Director of the assigned region.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with a two-year college degree (associate degree) in recreation, park management, therapeutic recreation or a related field; plus two years of related experience in recreation center, park, or community-based program coordination or a related field.

 

Special
Requirements:

CPR and First Aid certification. Driver's license. Must be capable of driving a 15-passenger van and have a good driving record. The appointees to these positions will be required to complete a criminal background check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of employer.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Bilingual in English and Spanish or other language. Experience: developing and implementing programs for at-risk youth; ensuring a safe recreational environment; making oral presentations to groups; developing activity and service strategies to achieve desired community outcomes; and supervising and coaching employees.

Note:

*Region 1 is located in southern Fairfax County. The teen center is located in Alexandria.

Region 3 is located in northern Fairfax County. The teen center is located in Reston.

 

Note:

Teen programs are rendered six days a week and operate day, night, and weekends hours. Staff members are required to rotate day, night and weekend schedules with members of their regional team.
