MOTOR EQUIPMENT SUPERINTENDENT

Description:

Responsible for total facility operations at the Newington Maintenance Facility. Manages the staff that perform routine maintenance and repair of county-owned vehicles and major items of equipment (motorcycles, passenger cars, pick-ups, trucks, off-the-road equipment, police cruisers, fire and rescue apparatus, school buses, and numerous special purpose items); and operation of a large equipment pool. Supervises staff of 80-90 employees skilled in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, auto body repair, tire and machine shop operations, road and wrecker services. Supervises the maintenance and repair records of equipment; plans the work program of the shop; supervises safety programs and ensures facility compliance with fire codes, electrical codes, OSHA/VOSHA, EPA and environmental codes, and other applicable regulations. Responsible for facility plant operations such as buildings, land, site drainage, sewer maintenance, lighting, security systems, paving, hazardous waste control and disposal and development of master plans. Develops budgetary recommendations for facility operations; researches new tools and diagnostic equipment that will improve performance, job conditions, and safety. Assists in the preparation of specifications for county vehicles in conjunction with county agencies. Evaluates products intended to increase efficiency of motor vehicles and minimize emissions. Coordinates with Warehouse Supervisor to determine parts inventory requirements of scheduled repairs and maintenance. Oversees coordination of new vehicle preparation and old vehicle disposal operations.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or G.E.D. issued by a state department of education; plus five years of experience in vehicle maintenance, at least three of which must have been at the supervisory level.

 

Special
Requirements:

Must have a valid driver's license. The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer prior to employment.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

At least 10 years of experience in the vehicle maintenance and repair trade. Experience in planning, scheduling, and executing a preventive maintenance program. Experience preparing clear and concise reports. Experience preparing and justifying sound budget requests. Ability to develop and maintain cordial and effective public and employee relationships. Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive and construction equipment. Ability to plan and direct the work of others including performance management.
