PROBATION COUNSELOR I (OVERNIGHT)


Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

Description:

Juvenile Detention Center. In the residential services division, works an awake overnight shift at the transitional living program, a post-dispositional community-based residential group home. Provides direct supervision to adolescent males ages 17 to 19 years old who are on probation/parole. Assists residents in learning and applying skills associated with independent living, including budgeting, continuing education, and obtaining and maintaining employment. Helps ensure residents are following treatment plans. Documents any serious incidents by completing a Serious Incident Report and forwarding the report to the Department of Juvenile justice and the placing agency. Ensures facility operation and building safety, maintenance, and security on all assigned shifts. Ensures the health care and physical well-being of residents through appropriate disbursement of medication and administration of first aid. Operates a 15 passenger van and transports residents to a variety of community activities. Duties are performed under general supervision.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree.

 

Special
Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer as a condition of hiring and periodically thereafter. Must have a valid driver's license in state of residence. Must undergo a medical screening prior to starting work. TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter. First Aid and CPR certifications, Medication Administration certification, Handle With Care (physical restraint procedures and techniques) certification required within a specified time frame after appointment and recertification annually thereafter.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree with courses in behavior sciences. Two years of work experience with children or adolescent groups may be substituted for two years of academic credit towards a bachelor's degree. Experience working with juveniles in a secure correctional environment. Experience working with adolescents in a residential setting. Ability to work with complex behavioral problems and respond to crisis situations. Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with residents. Excellent interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills.

 

Selection
Procedure:

In addition to a panel interview, a written exercise may be administered.

 

Note:

Work hours include awake overnight shifts from 11 p.m. to 10 a.m., and from 11 p.m. to 9 a.m., including weekends and holidays. Expected to participate in overnight wilderness trips at least two times per year. Some overtime may be required. This position is considered essential personnel for purposes of continuity of operations and may be required to respond during inclement weather or emergency situations identified.
