Description:

Multiple positions at various libraries throughout the county may be filled from this announcement.

Responds to the needs of library customers of all ages at the information desk. Determines the scope of the customer's questions and selects appropriate resources using both print and electronic sources. Serves as a primary resource for assisting youth, parents and caregivers with their educational and other informational needs. Advises youth directly on leisure reading, and works with other staff to ensure that youth are skillfully advised on reading. Trains, supervises and evaluates youth services staff. Maintains and evaluates the children's and teen collections to ensure that they are up-to-date and useful to the public. Works with staff to plan, publicize and present programs to youth of all ages. Manages the youth services department budget for programming and supplies. Offers tours to school groups. Manages the junior volunteer program. Presents programs and book talks in schools and for community groups as branch scheduling permits. Develops branch displays to highlight various aspects of the collection. Serves as branch person in charge as assigned. May work on system-wide projects for the enhancement of library services to youth.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Graduation from college with a master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school, or completion of coursework towards a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school. Virginia certification or Virginia provisional certification is required within three months of hire date.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Knowledge of children's and teen literature. Experience providing programs and book talks to youth. Experience working in a public library. Supervisory experience.
