Description:

Assists with the implementation of all field activities of the Forest Pest Management Program in an assigned area of Fairfax County. Assists in preparing maps and graphics using Geographic Information Computer (GIS) software. Educates citizens about common forest health issues including forest insect pests and diseases. Responds to citizen inquiries regarding forest health issues. Prepares letters, reports and educational materials related to forest health issues. With the assistance of information technology staff, maintains and composes content for the program's Internet site. Supervises seasonal/temporary personnel during high work load periods such as during treatment. Performs other duties as required.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field; plus two years of related experience in forestry, arboriculture, or landscape architecture, relating to urban forest management and/or forest pest management.

 

Special
Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer. Must obtain a valid Virginia Pesticide Applicator Certificate in Category 2, Forest Pest Control or Category 3-A, Ornamental Control within one year of appointment.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Certification as a Certified Arborist issued by the International Society of Arboriculture. Proficiency with hand-held Geographic Position Systems and Geographic Information Systems software (ArcGIS) and the ability to generate maps, charts, and associated reports using these technologies. Working knowledge of horticulture including trees, shrubs and vines as applied to the urban environment.

 

Note:

This position may be underfilled by a less experienced person at the Urban Forester I level (Grade S18, $41,132 to $54,843). Minimum qualifications for an Urban Forester I are: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field. Appointed incumbent will be non-competitively placed at the Urban Forester II level (Grade S24, $54,552 to $72,736) upon successfully satisfying the terms of the Underfill Agreement.
