MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR

Description:

The Adult Residential Services Division of the Fairfax-Falls Church CSB/Mental Health is seeking a full-time Mental Health Counselor. Provides support services and teaches independent living skills to adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders (including substance use and intellectual disabilities). Completes Medicaid and other billing documentation, and provides community integration activities. Works on a team consisting of therapist/case managers, medical staff, counselors and other on-site support staff. Shifts include weekends, evenings, holidays and may include overnights. Duties include medication administration, transporting clients, facility monitoring, and facilitating independent living skills groups.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, sociology, or nursing (or, for certain positions providing services to children and adolescents, a bachelor's degree in special education).

 

Special
Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, an Office of the Inspector General (OIG) check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer. Valid driver's license required. Will be required to transport clients in program vehicles.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related degree preferred. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable working with clients in their homes and in the community. Computer literacy required. Experience teaching independent living skills to individuals with mental illness. Knowledge of stages of change and motivational interviewing are a plus.
