Description:

Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, is seeking a transportation planner and/or traffic engineer to supervise a staff engaged in work on a wide range of transportation issues.

Demonstrates proactivity and a professional approach, as well as adaptability and resourcefulness, in addressing a dynamic and complex land development review process. Undertakes administration and coordination activities in the review process that will provide experience in addressing a multi-modal transportation approach applicable to both urban and suburban development. Directs staff in the evaluation of the transportation characteristics of development proposals. Fosters productive interactions with staff, the development community, citizens, advisory groups, task forces, and elected officials. Provides policy and analytical guidance. Encourages the development of solutions in the review framework to advance implementation of transportation goals. Continuously identifies and defines the means to achieve a more effective review environment. Fairfax County faces significant challenges as it shifts from a suburban to urban land use emphasis and is seeking innovative solutions to balance transportation and land use. This is an opportunity to work on a range of cutting edge land use and transportation initiatives, including planning, design, and implementation.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field (i.e., transportation/traffic engineering), plus five years of progressively responsible transportation planning related experience. The years of experience should include at least one year in evaluating the transportation network impacts of land use proposals.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have experience in: evaluating transportation network impacts of land use proposals; negotiation skills; coordinating with local, state, and federal government organizations; working with the public and officials on transportation issues; strong analytical skills; excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities; and ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
