PROBATION SUPERVISOR I


Juvenile Detention Center,
Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

Description:

Position is administrative in nature with supervisory and operational tasks. Oversees the Transportation Unit to ensure that operating procedures are followed and security is maintained. Identifies program needs and develops, implements and monitors policy and procedures specific to the operation of the Detention Center. Ensures program compliance with the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice Regulations and JDC policy and procedure. Provides supervision to assigned staff, conducts performance evaluations, ensures staff adherence to policy and procedure and provides staff with training and guidance in the performance of their duties. Participates in new hire selection process and training as needed, oversight supervision of the Volunteer Program, performs liaison functions with other county agencies, parents, probation counselors and allied professionals involved with detained youth. Ensures that program standards are maintained through quality control utilizing a variety of methods including the review of resident records, database maintenance, court order review and other information to ensure program compliance with DJJ standards. Meets residents' needs by responding to non-behavioral grievances and requests by interfacing with residents, parents/guardians and allied professionals. Represents the FJDC in Court Hearings, Court Detention Review meetings, Gang Response Committee meetings and other committee meetings as required. Coordination of the Mental Health Unit Services, compliance with PREA standards and other specialized programming and services as identified. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Detention Services.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a master's degree in social/behavioral sciences, law enforcement, or education; plus three years of professional experience in probation/court services work.

 

Special
Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, a criminal background check and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer as a condition of hiring and periodically thereafter. Must have a valid driver's license in state of residence. Must undergo a medical screening prior to starting work. TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter. First Aid and CPR certifications, Medication Administration certification, Handle With Care (physical restraint procedures and techniques) certification required within a specified time frame after appointment and recertification annually thereafter.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Thorough knowledge of the code of Virginia as it relates to Juvenile Justice, Places of Confinement and Authorization to Detain. Supervisory and managerial experience within a secure juvenile facility. Thorough knowledge and experience with the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) regulations governing Juvenile Secure Detention Centers. Experience auditing resident files to ensure compliance with policy, procedure and DJJ regulations. Experience with policy and procedure development. Knowledge and experience in managing adolescent mental health and behavioral concerns in a secure detention center. Experience and working knowledge of all aspects of the court system, including the intake process, probation and residential services. Should be a proven leader with excellent communication skills with emphasis on collaboration with other court service programs, agencies and allied professionals.
