SOCIAL SERVICES SPECIALIST III

Description:

This position will be located in the Fairfax Region. Provides volunteer coordination services for the BeFriend-A-Child program and will help support the volunteers in the volunteer and Partner Services Program. BeFriend-A-Child serves children ages 5-12 who are at risk of abuse or neglect or who have been abused or neglected. Responds to inquiries from the public about BeFriend-A-Child and other volunteer opportunities in VPS. Makes presentations in the community to recruit mentors for the programs and other programs offered by VPS. Conducts interviews and completes a written assessment of applicants who desire to be mentors. Provides individual training and preparation of the applicants prior to their match with a mentee. Conducts interviews and background checks on new volunteers. Facilitates matches for youth in the community referred by their Family Services worker from any of the Children, Youth and Families programs. Provides ongoing support and guidance to mentors and serves as a liaison between mentors and the referring staff. Newsletters, events and holiday activities along with recognitions are all part of the included duties. Demonstrates the use of appropriate judgment to be given responsibility for managing complex and/or crisis situations. Works collaboratively with staff from the other Children Youth and Families programs.

Coordinates and attends monthly weekend social activities (social/educational/experiential) for youth in the program. Uses automated technology to maintain client data, records, and correspondence. Tracks program expenditures and establishes partnerships with businesses, individuals, and organizations that are willing to sponsor activities for the BeFriend-A-Child program. Occasional evenings and one or two Saturdays per month are required.

 

Minimum
Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus three years of professional social work experience. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

 

Special
Requirements:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

 

Preferred
Qualifications:

Master's degree in social work (MSW); knowledge of child development; experience working with groups of children and/or adults; and experience with community organization or establishing community partnerships.
