Pay Fees


  • You can pay most transactions online. All credit card payments will incur a 2.35% charge for processing. Credit card processing fees are third party transaction fees and are non-refundable.

  • Use your bank’s routing number to pay online with an Automated Clearing House (ACH) payment and avoid a credit card fee. ACH payments are electronic payments that pull funds directly from your bank account.

  • Payments cannot be taken over the phone.

Please ensure that your bank account is set up for ACH payments

Returned checks and returned ACH payments are subject to a $50 fee (see Fairfax County Code § 1-1-17).

Building Permit Fees

If you have a building permit number, pay your fees online. You may use credit card or ACH payment.

Elevator Fees

If you are paying annual and periodic elevator fees, and you have an invoice number, pay your fees online. You may use credit card or ACH payment.

Elevator re-inspection fees and Category-5 fees are issued a permit number. Use the above permit payment page to pay your fees.

Site Plan-related Fees

For electronic plans ("ePlans") you will receive an email from ProjectDox with a link to pay. You may use credit card or ACH payment.

For electronic paper ("ePaper") submitted through ShareFile, use the new online payment portal. You may use credit card or ACH payment.

All Subdivision Grading Plan and Site Plan Grading Plan payments must be made using the new online payment portal. An invitation will not be sent to pay via ProjectDox for these plan types.

Other Fees

You can pay the following fees using the online payment portal, which accepts ACH (electronic check) payments only:

  • Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) License related fees
  • Board of Building Code Appeal (BBCA) fees
  • Code Modification fees
  • FOIA Fees

Drop Box Location

New Payment Options

Land Development Services and Department of Planning and Development now offer a secure drop box for customers to drop off agreements, deeds, plats, payments and other documents.

This drop box is located to the right of the main entrance of the Herrity Building at 12055 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA 22035.

Drop Box Outside Herrity Building:

  • You are welcome to use the drop box 24 hours a day.
  • When using the drop box, in addition to your submission, please be sure to include your name, phone number, project name and number, and which department the submission needs to be routed to.
  • Ensure the payment envelopes are sealed (checks only, no cash).
  • All checks must be filled out completely including a signature on the check’s signature line and a permit number and telephone number on the check’s memo line.

Check Processing for Checks Deposited in the Drop Box:

  • Site Plans: For any checks deposited in the drop box outside of the Herrity Building as payment for site-related plans, the processing time is 24-48 hours.
  • Building Plans: Our building permit systems are designed to accept payments online, linked directly to permits. We do offer a paper check option as a payment for building permits; however, it may take up to 15 business days for those payments to process.
