Library Fees

The Fairfax County Public Library assesses late fees to the record of any borrower who fails to return or renew library materials on or before their due date.If an overdue item is successfully renewed, borrowers are responsible for the payment of any late fees that accumulate while the item is overdue. Responsibility for returning items in a timely manner belongs to the cardholder. The library offers email notification of due date reminders to help customers avoid late fees. If you do not choose to receive email notifications about your account and have provided a phone number you will receive a phone call when an item is ten days past due.

Borrowing privileges are blocked when fees of $15 or more or owed and when fees of any amount are owed for more than one year.

Lost and Damaged Materials

Items that are more than 50 days overdue will be declared lost and the cardholder will be billed for the cost of the item plus a $3.00 processing fee. If the long overdue item is returned the replacement and processing fees will be removed and the cardholder will instead be billed for the maximum overdue rate for the item. Items that are damaged will be billed for the cost of the item plus a $3.00 processing fee. Once a lost item is paid for it becomes the property of the customer and the library will not provide a refund or credit if found. A replacement item in good condition (free of markings, stains or labels) plus a $3.00 processing fee will be accepted in place of payment for most lost or damaged library materials. Visit or call a library branch before purchasing a replacement copy to ensure the correct item is purchased.

Collection Agency

The library is obligated to attempt the recovery of all outstanding debt and/or library materials. To that end, customers with fees of $25 or more are subject to referral to a collection agency and a non-negotiable $10.00 referral fee will be applied to the account. Customers referred to the collection agency may ultimately be credit reported.
