Effective Monday, March 16, all Fairfax County Public Library full-service locations and other community facilities will be closed for two weeks. The impacted facilities include recreation (RECenters), nature, community, resource and teen centers, as well as golf courses, historic sites and (permitted use of) athletic fields and picnic shelters. Please find more information on the County’s new COVID-19 webpage or the emergency blog.

This was a difficult decision to make as we know how much people rely on their libraries to support their educational, entertainment, and recreational needs. However, libraries are a hub of community activity with some branches drawing thousands of visitors per day. With the CDC and the Governor recommending gatherings of no more than 50 people, and with FCPS schools closed through April 10th, the best course of action was to close all twenty-two full-service libraries for a period of time.

Although library branches are closed, some staff will be on site to support phone and virtual reference. FCPL is also working on a curbside pick up option; more info to follow later this week. Some additional specifics include:

  • All library-sponsored programs are cancelled through April 12th.
  • All meeting room bookings are cancelled through April 12th.
  • Due dates for all physical materials will be extended for thirty days.
  • Overdue fines will be suspended.
  • Hold pick up dates will be extended to 10 days and may be reassessed for a longer period of time.
  • No new interlibrary loan requests will be processed; current interlibrary loan requests will remain in production.
  • No donated materials will be accepted through March 29th.
  • WiFi will continue during the library’s normal operating hours and can be accessed in the parking lots.
  • The Access Services library will continue to provide materials via mail to homebound patrons.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time. Feel free to email us at WWWLib@fairfaxcounty.gov or call at 703-324-3100 for more information.
