Virtual Programs and Events: How Are We Doing?

One year after library programming went digital in response to the pandemic, we check in on its success.

By Renee Edwards, Former FCPL Programming and Educational Services Manager

In early March 2020, library life changed as we knew it. Branches closed. Book checkout and return froze. In-person events came to a screeching halt. But just as quickly as services stopped, library staff began planning new ways to share our resources and programs with the community.

thumbs upAs soon as FCPL’s programming staff discovered we could no longer host in-person events, we started devising Operation Program Virtual. Customer service remained the focus as we discussed how to navigate the world of virtual programming. We dove into videoconferencing and YouTube video production and offered our first virtual program March 20, 2020. To date we have hosted and posted hundreds of online events and videos, from yoga classes, author events and cooking demos to educational series, book clubs and crafting tutorials. We use two different formats: you may participate in live events by registering for them in our online calendar, or you can subscribe to our YouTube channel and watch recorded program videos.

"The online programs helped me explore new interests, feel more connected and informed, and structure my days during a time in which I was having trouble finding other ways to do so."

Recently, we surveyed some patrons and program participants to ask “How are we doing?” The response was overwhelmingly positive, with 78% of respondents rating our programs as much better or better than expected. The comments people shared were very encouraging, too.

“I retired during the pandemic lockdown in April and was feeling very isolated and at loose ends until I thought of the library,” said one patron. “The online programs helped me explore new interests, feel more connected and informed, and structure my days during a time in which I was having trouble finding other ways to do so. Thank you so much for all you have offered, from your programs on systemic racism this summer to your exercise classes and more!”

"You're helping me stay home and engaged during the pandemic.”

“Thank you for being so creative during this time,” said another patron. “I have learned so much attending your offerings on such topics as the history of China, women's suffrage and immigration. Keep up the good work! You're helping me stay home and engaged during the pandemic.”

pink speech bubble with a heart insideWe understand the importance of still being able to connect with others while practicing social distancing and staying at home. FCPL’s virtual programming is one way to encourage that sense of togetherness. “Virtual programming helps make the lack of human contact more bearable,” explained one patron. “Being able to see and hear people talk reminds me I belong to a community.”

We appreciate your support and participation throughout the pandemic, and we look forward to seeing you at the next online event!
