Friends of the Lorton Library

Lorton LibraryThe Friends of the Lorton Library was formed in 1983. We have been active in support of the library and the surrounding Lorton community. We are very active in the support of what we feel is the best library branch in the county. The history of the Friends of the Lorton Library dates to when Lorton had only a storefront branch in Williamsburg Square. Early Friends supporters were Harry Lattimore, Joanne Foster and Nancy Roper.

With the opening of the Community Library in April, 1990, a new Friends organization was formed and helped sponsor opening day festivities for the new branch. Since the opening, the Friends have continued to support branch needs, including a period when several officers of the Friends were no longer able to offer their support. In January 1998 the Friends group was revitalized with new officers under the leadership of Anne Marsh.

Mission Statement
The Friends are committed to sponsoring a love of reading and encouraging everyone to avail themselves of the wide variety of resources our library offers.

Accomplishments
The Friends have supported library programs for adults and children; purchased computer-related equipment and supplies, furniture and display items; assisted in holiday and commemorative activities; conducted ongoing and periodic book sales; met other library needs not in the formal Fairfax County Public Library budget.

Membership
There are no membership fees. There is a bulletin board in the vestibule which has current Friends information on meeting times and membership. We welcome you to attend our meetings and are always looking for new members. We hope to see you at our next meeting.

Meeting Dates
We meet about five times a year from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., usually on a Monday night.

Donation Process
Donations of books and magazines at Lorton Library are received in the donation bin inside the library's front door. Please call ahead (703-339-7393) to make sure that donations are currently being accepted. Due to our limited space, we are required at times to suspend the acceptance of donations, and at all times we are not able to accept the donation of a large number of items. Donated materials become the property of the library and may be added to the collection or sold at the library's discretion. Receipts acknowledging donations are available at Lorton Library's circulation desk. The library does not assign a monetary value to donations.

The Fairfax Library Foundation offers a Wish List through Amazon.com of high-demand books, selected by library specialists, that you can donate to the library. You can be sure that you're meeting an immediate and specific need.

These items are not accepted at Lorton Library:
Items in bad, soiled, damaged, or moldy condition.
Textbooks, especially those that are more than a few years old.
Magazines that are more than a few years old.
Encyclopedia sets.
