WILLIAM LANE built "Oak Hill" sometime after the revolutionary war. WILLIAM and his wife SARAH moved c. 1800 to "Burlington," near Centreville and their daughter HANNAH ESKRIDGE FITZHUGH and her second husband JOSEPH ROWLES took up residence at "Oak Hill." Upon Hannah's death she was buried behind the house, perhaps the first burial there. The house stayed in the family until the early 20th century. Tradition holds that the gravestones in the backyard were intentionally buried, and are still there. The precise location of the cemetery is unknown.
