As Fairfax County considers zoning rules for short-term rentals, offered through sites like Airbnb, residents can weigh in at a community meeting on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., at the Government Center, conference rooms 9 and 10.

This meeting is a chance to provide feedback, ask questions and learn about the results from a community survey. Zoning officials previously held three community meetings in September, along with conducted an online survey to solict input.

The proposed zoning rules that may address:

  • Where these rentals would be allowed in the county
  • How often they could be rented out
  • What types of properties could be rented out
  • How many people would be allowed to stay in a property at any one time

Short term rentals are defined as properties that are rented less than 30 days. They are often listed and booked on websites like Airbnb, Flipkey, Homeaway, VRBO others.

The county is considering the regulations as a result of new state law passed this year that allows localities to require registration of short term rentals. The Board of Supervisors directed county staff to initiate an analysis of short term rentals and propose draft zoning regulations.

Ultimately, the board will decide whether to adopt the new rules, and both the Planning Commission and board will hold public hearings on the zoning rules before any action is taken. No public hearing dates have been scheduled at this time. However, future updates on public hearing dates will be posted on the short term rental webpage.
