If you want to compost but cannot do it at home, Farmers Market Composting provides a convenient solution to keep food out of the waste stream.
Beginning June 23, our pilot program that began in November 2020 at the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex is expanding to make the service available at three county-operated farmers markets and one non-profit market thanks to a partnership between the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and the Park Authority.
Food scrap composting diverts our food waste to a beneficial use. When we compost organic waste, it is used as a natural fertilizer or soil amendment, where the nutrients are put back into the soil.
