2018 Car Tax Due Oct. 5; Here’s What You Need to Know

Have you paid your 2018 vehicle (car) tax? It’s due Friday, Oct. 5.

The county mailed out more than 800,000 annual bills this summer to vehicle owners and the deadline to pay your bill is coming up on Friday, Oct. 5. The good news – there are many ways to pay and extended hours to help make the process easier for you.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute!

If you have a question or concern about your tax bill, contact our customer service staff in the Department of Tax Administration. The hours are weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 703-222-8234 (TTY 711), or send an email.

You can also access your personal property (car tax) and real estate tax account information securely online via our MyFairfax web portal. When you create an account, MyFairfax enables you to:

  • Access tax information.
  • Register new vehicles or update vehicles moved or sold.
  • View current and past real estate assessments and payment information.

The easiest way to pay your bill is online, but the county offers several convenient (and quick!) ways to pay. Tip: have your bill handy, you will need the information listed on it.

Extended hours at the Government Center are available for your convenience, if you choose to pay in person:

  • Saturday, Sept. 29: 8 a.m. to noon
  • Monday, Oct. 1, to Wednesday, Oct. 3: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 4: 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 5: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

*Please note: In the past, Fairfax County has provided cash payment options for car taxes at local Global Express retailers, such as Shoppers Food Warehouse. Unfortunately, this service is no longer available. The Department of Tax Administration is exploring options to resume this type of service for 2019, but in the meantime please refer to the list of payment options above.

 

Your Bill Includes Local Registration Fee

  • Your personal property (car) tax bill includes a local registration fee for vehicles regularly garaged, stored or parked in Fairfax County.
  • Your county tax bill is separate and distinct from the state registration fee paid to the Virginia DMV.
  • Other than a safety inspection sticker, Fairfax County does not require the display of a windshield decal.
  • The Town of Clifton, Town of Herndon and Town of Vienna each charge a local registration fee, which is included in your Fairfax County personal property tax bill. They also do not require the display of a windshield decal.

 

Tax Relief

You may qualify for tax relief if you are at least 65 years old, or permanently and totally disabled and meet the income and asset eligibility requirements. Additional circumstances may allow you to reduce your taxes.
