Walney Road Bridge Reopens Sept. 1

An important road in Chantilly reopens on Tuesday (weather permitting) after five months of bridge replacement and road widening.

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to remove the Walney Road detour from Westfields Blvd. to Mariah Court. The roadway will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction while construction on the project continues.

The $14.9 million project widens Walney Road from two to four lanes near Willard Road to help improve safety and ease congestion, as well as replaces the 85-foot-long bridge (which was “functionally obsolete”). The project is scheduled for completion in December to also include five-foot bike lanes in both directions, a sidewalk on the west side and a shared-use path on the east side.
