FROGS Wins Harold L. Strickland Partnership and Collaboration Award

The Fairfax County Park Authority Board has named the Friends of Green Spring (FROGS) the recipient of the 2018 Harold L. Strickland Partnership and Collaboration Award. FROGS, which has just marked its 25th anniversary, has a membership base of more than 1,500 individuals who offer financial and volunteer support at Green Spring Gardens located in Alexandria, VA.

The organization was praised for its amazing spirit of partnership and collaboration with the Fairfax County Park Authority for the past quarter century. Its major projects include the Garden Gate Plant Shop, Harry Allen Winter Lecture Series, Art Shows, Glasshouse renovations, Gazebo renovations, Historic House renovations, the Wheels Appeal (providing utility vehicles necessary for staff), and ongoing funding for summer intern positions and other seasonal staff positions at Green Spring. FROGS also helped fund improvements to the ponds and irrigations system, greened the park with money for plants, helped with maintenance, supported professional development and training opportunities for staff, and provided money for gardening tools.

Since 1993, FROGS has donated more than $2 million to support Green Spring’s operations and special projects. The organization’s annual donation represents approximately 25 percent of projected revenue for the park.

The Fairfax County Park Authority Board established the Harold L. Strickland Partnership and Collaboration Award in June 2015 in honor of the retiring Park Board member’s long service and significant contributions to the Park Authority. In the spirit of Strickland’s accomplishments, this award recognizes the value and importance of teamwork and cooperation necessary to provide varied constituencies with state-of-the-art facilities in our Fairfax County Parks, often at limited, reduced or no capital expense to the taxpayer. FROGS will receive its award at the Elly Doyle Park Services and Outstanding Volunteers Award ceremony in November.
