Parks Poetry Contest Deadline extended to March 17

Parks Poetry Contest Deadline extended to March 17

The Fairfax County Park Authority has extended the deadline for the 2020 Parks Poetry Contest.  Entries will now be due by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. The previous deadline was March 13.

The extended deadline will allow students in grades K-8 to work on entries over the weekend and on the March 16 Teacher Workday just announced by Fairfax County Public Schools, while also giving teachers additional time for bulk submission. Submission options for all entries include online upload, mail, or in-person delivery to Park Authority headquarters. For more information, visit Poetry Contest.

The 2020 Fairfax Parks Poetry Contest is open to students in grades K-8. in honor of National Poetry Month in April. This year’s contest celebrates National Poetry Month in April as well as the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Using this year’s theme of “My Parks, My Planet,” students are encouraged to share how local parks inspire them to take care of the planet. Poetry contest participants compete for prizes and a chance to read their poems at the Fairfax County 2020 Earth Day Festival in April. The contest is presented by the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Fairfax County Park Foundation.

Six lucky winners will be invited to read their poem at a poetry showcase during the Fairfax County 2020 Earth Day Festival at Sully Historic Site on April 25, 2020. Winners will receive a $50 Fairfax County Park Authority gift card -- sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Foundation -- to continue exploring Fairfax parks all year long. All participants will be recognized with a certificate.
