Folks throughout the world will be celebrating Earth Day 2021 from April 20 to April 22, and this year, the theme is “Together, We can Restore Our Earth.”
The Fairfax County Park Authority will be joining in this effort to combat climate change and environmental destruction through a series of activities in April. These activities have been designed to recognize the important role parks play in preserving the planet and to help educate about ways we can all help to Restore Our Earth.
Follow Park Authority social media accounts for #earthdayfairfax facts, tips and programs. Posts will begin in mid-April and continue through Arbor Day on April 30, 2021. The Park Authority’s Our Stories and Perspectives blog will include Earth Day features that address topics, such as ways to mow less and ways to turn your backyard into a mini park.
This year, the Park Authority’s annual student poetry contest celebrates poetry, parks and Planet Earth with a theme that highlights the 70th anniversary of the Fairfax County Park Authority. In recent years, contest winners have been honored at Springfest Fairfax -- now known as Earth Day Fairfax -- at Sully Historic Site. While the larger festival is not being held this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, a Virtual Poetry Showcase will feature poetry readings from the nine student winners. The showcase will be shared on the Park Authority’s website and social media platforms on April 22. For more info, visit the Poetry Contest website.
