FCPA To Host Information Briefing on MVRC Renovation

Mt. Vernon Rec CenterThe Fairfax County Park Authority, in cooperation with the Mount Vernon District Supervisor’s Office, will hold an informational briefing to discuss the approaching renovation and expansion schedule of the Mount Vernon Rec Center (MVRC) on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The briefing will be held at Bucknell Elementary School located at 6925 University Drive, Alexandria, Virginia. The meeting will be held in the cafeteria.

Updating and expanding the Mount Vernon Rec Center continues to be a priority of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA). On Wednesday, March 23, 2022, the Park Authority Board concurred with staff recommendations to close the Mount Vernon Rec Center for approximately two years through the duration of the renovation. The Rec Center will close in early 2023. This was a difficult decision that reflects FCPA’s continuing commitment to provide the community with promised renovations, improvements and facility expansions, including a second sheet of ice and a dedicated fitness center. Significant Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility improvements are planned facility-wide via universal design.

Representatives from the Park Authority will explain the project schedule, including the timing of a recently approved two-year facility closure that’s due in large measure to supply chain issues related to the pandemic, as well as failure of key infrastructure systems at MVRC that pose operational issues for cus-tomers and staff. Information will also be presented in relation to other nearby facilities that Rec Center passholders and the public may use, as well as refunds or extensions for existing passholders.

Those with questions are invited to send them in advance of the meeting. You can send your questions to Parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov. Questions will be accepted through May 3, 2022, to provide adequate time to prepare responses. Questions will also be taken at the meeting as time permits.

Mount Vernon Rec Center, which was constructed in 1974, is one of the agency’s oldest and most popular facilities.
